P.Risb.
The name Princes Risborough is too long to fit on local road signs, so P.Risb. it is.
I varied my drive back from shopping in Thame this morning to come through the pretty little market town of Princes Risborough. It belonged to King Harold before William the Conqueror arrived in 1066, and in the mid-14th century it belonged to Edward, the Black Prince, which is where the "Princes" comes from. "Risborough" means brushwood-covered hills, by which it is still surrounded (I live on one). The parish church of St Mary dates from the 13th century and the village streets are full of beautiful little old cottages.
This view could be from any century if it wasn't for the tell-tale yellow sign. I haven't been there for many months and the High Street was quite sad with two or three cafes open for takeaways and virtually all the other shops, pubs and restaurants closed. My little village of Chinnor isn't suffering so badly as almost all the (very few) shops are essential: baker, butcher, bottle shop (!), pharmacist and Post Office. Only the charity shop and the barber's shop are closed. It was great to see the children heading off to school this morning!
