Sam Ainsley- iconic figure in art world

To those who know the Glasgow art scene Sam Ainsley, co-founder of the internationally celebrated MFA programme at Glasgow School of Art in 1989 needs no introduction.

This afternoon, in celebration of International Women’s Day, Sam, a woman who has fought for the voice of women artists to be heard, was the guest speaker in a Forum for artists on zoom organised by Lesley McDermott.

She says she lived though the golden period of GSA where Scottish students from working class backgrounds had an equal chance of securing place. But the expansion of the college and influx of fee paying foreign students coupled with student fees has changed all that.

But her advice remains the same to all artists: “Follow your passion, follow your dreams. Don’t get side-tracked by what is fashionable. It will pass.”
