Curled Pondweed

On our most recent journey to Spalding we stopped at a little ditch by the River Welland to take a sample of a slightly mysterious looking pondweed that we'd observed previously. I thought it was most likely to be Curled Pondweed, but the dimensions were at the limits of those given in the key, so I thought it ought to be checked by the national expert in case it was a rare hybrid. I took a few photographs to send to him, and he's now confirmed that it';s almost certainly one of the winter forms of the species, which can have very different foliage from the summer plants.

Otherwise it was a fairly quiet day, mostly catching up with emails. Every time I answer one, it seems to stimulate about five more! Highlight of the day was cooking a delicious butternut squash, leek and kale risotto for dinner, flavoured with sage, nutmeg and goat cheese and garnished with maple pecans - very delicious!
