which way is up?
For the local walks I've been doing recently, there has been no need for a map or compass. I love looking at maps, though, and thought it was time to brush up on my navigation skills.
One thing that always fascinates me is that there is more than one kind of north..there's true north, which is the direction along Earth's's surface towards the geographic North Pole or True North Pole. Then there is magnetic north, the direction of the Earth's magnetic field, which the compass points to, and thirdly there is grid north, which aligns with the vertical grid lines on a map.
The even more confusing thing is that magnetic north is moving east! In 2014, for the first time in hundreds of years, magnetic north started to be east of grid north. Read all about it HERE!
The good news is that the difference in the UK is so small that if you ignore it, you probably won't get lost as a consequence.
Phew!
Today's walks: 1) To RB and fish farm. 2.02 miles 2) to Birkbush and back. 2.1miles.
