Stirling’s new poet
Delighted to learn that Laura Fyfe, an old friend of mine, has been appointed Stirling’s Makar, official poet.
Makar is a Scots word for poet or bard.
It’s is a ceremonial job with links going back to the 15th century and the reign of James IV.
A teacher, poet and director of the Scottish Poetry Library, Laura’s job will entail writing a poem once a year celebrating Stirling and its people, and promoting writing throughout the Region.
As a working class writer she hopes to give voice to many people whose stories so far have never been heard.
