Columbjohn Chapel

Todays is my friends special birthday and we decided to celebrate it with a visit to a local National Trust garden.  The weather was good although a bit cold but with the sun appearing throughout the day.  We started by wandering around the garden delighting in the displays of daffodils, camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias all in various states of flowering.  There were also several areas of frittillary flowers which we stopped to photograph.  We headed off to explore the outer areas of grassland and woods trying to spot a nearby woodpecker.  The rather cute cow was spotted as we returned.  I only realised it had one horn when I looked at the photo on the screen, see extra.

A picnic lunch was eaten and then my friend suggested walking to the Columbjohn Chapel which we had visited many years ago with our walking group.  It was a lovely walk down through woodland towards the river.  We found the small chapel which lies close to the river in a very quiet and peaceful site.  It apparently is built on the site of an earlier chapel and the original mansion house that was the home of the Acland family prior to the construction of Killerton House.  An enjoyable day out.
