On Heroes

Today I came across this beautiful woodcut frontispiece in a 1904 edition of Thomas Carlyle's essays on heroes and hero worship (the original was published in 1841). The style is decidedly art nouveau. The woodcut has been protected for more than a century behind a glassine paper interleaf through which you can just make out an engraving of Oliver Cromwell, the subject of one essay.
