Stone carving

This stone carving in the Dean Village from 1643 shows two bakers’ peels, each carrying three cakes. These were the wooden paddles used to remove the baked goods from the oven. Dean Village at one time had eleven working mills and its grain mills supplied the bakers of Edinburgh with flour.
