More Apple woes

After the recent problems with OSX (Big S* is still 'dropping' my main external drive regularly, and I have to reboot to get it recognised again), now the IOS iPad is playing up. The home screen seemed to have this battery status box locked into the centre  (but always showing 100%). I finally had to power it off and reboot to solve the problem.
