Tramping
Our plan for one day while we are down in Wanaka was to take the kids on an overnight tramp and stay in one of the huts.
With the weather looking superb for today we decided that we'd head out. The destination was Aspiring Hut, a 38 bed hut in the Matukituki Valley - a simply sublime location.
The car park (Raspberry Flat) is about 60km from Wanaka, much of it on an unsealed road, and all of it incredibly spectacular. We arrived at 11 and by 11.30 we had setoff, the hut a 9km trek up the valley. The walk time is 2.5 hours, but we figured with a 4 and 6 year old we might be a tad longer, especially with an easter egg hunt en-route. Of course, the kids bought some baskets to put the eggs into ;-)
To cut a long story short, the kids did fantastically, and even with the lunch and egg hunt we still got there a little after 3. A superb effort for their first real tramp, and their first time in a hut overnight.
The hut itself is awesome, of the 38 beds, only 7 other people were staying the night including another young friend for the kids. So a great night, and early to bed for all.
