Day One- garden centre

These flowers are ready to go – and not a customer in sight.
Where are the people?   It’s Easter Monday and the first day of opening after lockdown.

Instead there is a strange calmness about the place starting with an orderly queue outside and a tight control of numbers.

Once inside folk walk around as if in a daze, unable to believe they have finally been let out again. Instead of laden trolleys, the usual sight at this time of the year, many are just carrying a couple of items or a plant or two before hurrying out again.

For some reason I had been expecting it to be more of a celebratory affair, maybe with music and banners and “treats” for visitors.

But it was not to be. At the back of all our minds is the   spectre of a third Covid wave arriving from Europe.

Even Boris, normally gung-ho, said tonight on telly they had no idea how effective the vaccines would be against such a scenario.

Meanwhile I have a big bag of begonia tubers because I am determined to have colour in the garden this year.

Happy gardening folks!
