Who Goes There?
The garden is neglected, and whatever critter dug this enormous hole knows it. The entry is a good five inches in diameter and the mound of dirt around it is impressive. It seems too big for a gopher, but too small for anything else we can think of...fox? badger? raccoon? It's at the bottom of a rock wall and goes straight under the top terrace where the raised vegetable beds are. There is nothing planted in them except for some huge fava bean plants that have been completely taken over by black aphids. I don't dare tell John about either of these things or he will crawl up the 32 steps on his hands and knees!
I hope the broken ankle heals before the vermin take over!
My brother (a dirt farmer at heart) and his wife have just sold their house in Fallbrook, a sleepy little town in Northern San Diego County and moved into a 7th floor condominium in downtown SanDiego. We've had conversations about how long he will like living in a place where he depends on an elevator to get to the street, but right now they are looking at it as an adventure! Sounds pretty good to me....
