Where Has All The Water Gone?
It is pretty grim for farmers and stock in many parts of New Zealand right now with a great deal of the North Island having been declared drought zones.
Here in Marlborough, the Council is planning to cut off a number of irrigation permits if there is no significant rain in the next few days. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the wet stuff....
The Taylor River continues to dry up in the upper reaches. The dogs and I know just where the remaining pools and flows occur but we have to walk further to get to them. Those last lots of water are a refuge for trout and eels.
In today's blip, Fergus is sadly contemplating the stepping stones crossing the river. "Where has all the water gone?"
It's funny...I can get across on dry shingle at the moment. However without thinking too much about it, both the dogs and I crossed on the stepping stones this morning. Old habits die hard!
Those stepping stones are rather large rocks and one has to almost leap from one to another. During the Winter and Spring the stones are sometimes impassible as the water flows right over the top of them..
No doubt I will be doing some blips in the future to demonstrate this situation. In the meantime we cross on the shingle and wait for the rains....
