Zillions of Anemones
I'd seen a photo on Flickr of wood anemones in Swithland Wood, so that's where Basil and I went this afternoon.
It was glorious, almost magical and so quiet. Since they've started conservation work, coppicing and clearing unwanted trees and shrubs, the woodland floor has opened up to reveal all the anemones. Bluebells have already begun to push through and will take over within two weeks.
Basil scampered off and disappeared for five minutes. I was glad when he returned.
Swithland Wood is the last surviving remnant of ancient woodland in Charnwood Forest and is an SSSI. Slate was quarried here in the nineteenth century. The pits have been filled with water.
A beautiful interlude. Extra is of pink anemones.
