Hungry Horace ......

Monday !
2 cows calved during the night. One calf was in sucking fine when I drove up on the quad bike. Mum was doing the ‘ paw the ground and chuck stoor over your shoulder’ thing so left them to it. The second cow had calved in a shed so moved her and the calf to a pen on their own. She had mastitis in February so don’t know how many tits are working. Will check later.
Headed off to the mart at St Boswell’s with 6 heifers. Noticed when I went to wash out that one of the trailer hubs was hot. So headed round to Mr D ,my mechanic pal , who took the 2 front hubs off and fitted new brake shoes.
Back up the road by 4 pm then started to catch up on all the jobs that hadn’t been done in my absence .
Had to milk out this morning’s Simmental cow and bottle feed the calf. She only has 2 out of 4 tits working so presume I’ll need to teach the calf to suck the right ones . At least it sucked the bottle no bother. The joys.
