St Johns Lye

This is a view of St Johns Lye which is an area of parkland and woodland alongside the Basingstoke Canal in St Johns Village, near Woking. The canal path is popular with walkers and cyclists and there are various walks around the Lye itself. I'm afraid I don't know the origin of the word, Lye, but my guess is that it derives from Lea, which is an Old English word for meadow.
