Yard 23 Angel Yard
Continuing the theme of Kendal Yards, this yard was the site of the former Angel Hotel. Legend has it that Bonnie Prince Charlie's soldiers had broken into the Hotel in 1745. The only family member that had not run off was a small child holding a sword standing next to the statue of an angel. With superstitious fear the soldiers fled. It was one the oldest hostelries in Kendal but could not keep up with competition and the hotel closed in the 1980s. The yard itself retains some authentic charm and I walked down it while trying to follow an "Adventure Lab" geocache which made me wander the town answering questions; a pleasant diversion from shopping.
