The Battle For The Brewery
I for a Bethnal Green ramble this morning before the rain. Pellicci's café was full outside so I carried on walking. Onward into Brick Lane and the Truman brewery. In the yard at the back an installation is being erected depicting the chimney of the brewery as though it has collapsed. It's so deceptive because the fabric is stretched over ribs with a brick effect painted on and other bricks scattered around.
There are still safety fences around it because it isn't quite finished but in a day or two you will be able to walk inside it (I think).
I don't know what the message is, but at the moment there is a planning battle raging because developers want to demolish the historic brewery (see extra) and build a shopping mall on the site, probably with ultra expensive apartments on top. So perhaps it is something to do with that. The speculators have already torn up the historic cobbles in the other yard across the road.
Looks like another corner of the old east end will be going before too long.
