ARGUS CYCLE RACE

Thirty five thousand cyclists take part in this scenic cycle race of over 100 k round the Cape Peninsula. Many Capetonians have to stay put as roads are closed to accommodate the cyclists. We were invited by a neighbour to watch the race from a balcony overlooking the main road. Jubilee Square was a refreshment and first aid stop and music with an energetic beat encouraged the cyclists to keep up the pace. Vibrant colour, noise of cheering on lookers, constant movement as group after group of cyclists swept through Simon's Town, this is what I tried to capture. What I could not capture were images that swept past of physically handicapped cyclists riding adapted cycles or being transported by others in amazing contraptions. The spontaneous interaction of bystanders and cyclists was heartwarming.
