La loca del rinconín

Gijón was probably the port of embarcation for the majority of the tens of thousands of Asturians who emigrated to the Americas. For many emigration was an attempt to better themselves economically. For others, during and after the Civil War, it was a way to escape the consequences of the war. Some came back, some of them with fortunes; others stayed, and of those who stayed in the Americas some remain in close contact with their communitiesof origin.
But emigration is a major feature of 20th century Asturian history. This bronze statue, made by Ramón Muriedas in 1970, is called La madre del emigrante (The mother of the emigrant). It stands in el rinconín, a little corner, a km or so east of Gijón, and records the emotions of the mothers left behind. It´s better known to people from Gijón as La loca del rinconín - the mad woman of the rinconín.
