Great Spotted

Today's the day ....................... to make do

You really wouldn't want to mess with a bird that has a beak as strong and lethal as the Great Spotted Woodpecker.  

This is a male with his conspicuous red nape patch and red under tail.  He eats a variety of foods, being capable of extracting seeds from pine cones, insect larvae from inside trees - or indeed eggs and chicks of other birds from their nests.  He's on the peanuts here - but that's only because the fatballs are finished.  They would normally be his food of choice when he graces us with his presence.

And so, because we love to see him here - I'd better go and make sure there's some out for him ........................ !
