Diary of an Edinburgher

Dodgy neighbourhood?

Not a promising start to the expected sunny day, but it came right by mid morning. JR went to the gym, but says she’s not going next week. Edinburgh’s Covid cases seem to be rising alarmingly. She’ll do her online classes instead for a while.

I happened to be standing by the bay window, when there was a loud CRUMP (ie, a vehicle banging into something) outside, followed instantaneously by a child’s scream. I could see the people opposite looking out of their windows, and Hazel was on the phone (ringing 999, though I didn’t know) I’m not quite sure what happened, but an ambulance, two police cars and the road was closed. I think the child has a broken leg.

The new tenants for next door arrived. They had so much stuff! They are Chinese students who are not allowed to go home to China yet. They LOVE the flat - so much space! The height of the ceilings! And did ONE person live here? But they were worried about the police cars nearby - they thought it was a dodgy neighbourhood.

Elizabeth changed her Archie day for tomorrow, so we all set off for a walk in the sunshine. I was pleased to see cricket had returned on the Meadows. It looks really summery here, but don’t be fooled - there was a cool breeze. We had several sits downs, once with coffee and a pastry, and one with an ice cream. I was going to get the bus back home by the time I’d reached the uni, but decided to carry on (with the promise of an ice cream) and do the whole circuit. (6,340 steps)

The Grassmarket was MOBBED! Back to a normal sunny Saturday afternoon. Mary’s Milk Bar had the longest queue that I’ve ever seen there, but there’s a new ice cream shop opened, so we got one there instead, and it was very good.

We just missed seeing a newly married couple, long white lacey dress (her) and full kilt and jacket outfit (him) posing at the top of the Vennel Steps.

When we came home, JR popped in to see how the new tennants were settling in. They got a bit of a shock this afternoon when the front door opened and people walked right into the flat!! The real estate agent (it’s For Sale) was showing people round... er... NO. I think it’s been sorted out now, but what a fright they must have got.
