Sphinx pinastri - Pine Hawk Moth
I noticed this monotone beauty as I was cutting the grass. It was hanging from a strong straw of grass in an area of longer grass. I noticed it first because of it's size. This one is about 7 cm long. Then it's camouflage is not very effective when it's in the grass. I'm sure I wouldn't have seen it if it had been sitting on the trunk of a pine tree.
It just hung there while I moved in really close for my photograph so I'm not sure what the state of its health is. Apparently it eats the nectar from honeysuckle but our honeysuckle flowers are not out yet so I hope it's finding an alternative.
