Until the 20th century Dalkeith was a very important market centre for agriculture and had the largest grain market in Scotland.  The markets supplied the Borders and Edinburgh with produce from the surrounding areas and often cows could be seen walking along the street to and from the cattle market.  This new mural of six highland cows “keeking o’re a Dyke” commemorates the days when cattle were seen being walked along the High Street and peering over walls on their way.
