Elmer Makes His Mark

Today's image is part of Elmer's Big Heart of Kent Parade. The elephant sculpture trail will raise money for the Heart Of Kent Hospice in Aylesford and is based on Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, the star of the iconic children's books by David McKee.
There are 51 uniquely designed elephant sculptures (large and small), decorated by local and national artists and they will be scattered around Maidstone forming three walks totalling around 6 miles.
The trail will be a reflection of the town's history, economic heart and areas of natural beauty.
This particular elephant is called "Never Forget" and sits at the top of Fremlin Walk. It was created by Nathan Reed - he is originally from the town and has been a professional children's illustrator for 20 years. It was inspired by his childhood visits to the Hot Air Balloon Festival at nearby Leeds Castle - with the images of the balloons representing and reflecting on his childhood memories of Maidstone.
