a lifetime burning

Jimminy Cricket

I used to see a lot of these tiny speckled bush crickets, but this is the first that I've spotted this year.  It is still pretty small, if you ignore the antennae it is less than 1 cm long.  Its those long antennae that tell you its a cricket rather than a grasshopper.  When it is full grown it will be about 3 times its present size if not more.

This one is actually a bit of devil to photograph.  This is partly because its so small, and partly because it is an awkward shape for the very shallow depth of field that the macro lens delivers.  If you want the eyes and the main rear leg in focus then you have to accept that the back of the body won't be etc.

Which brings us to the third reason its a devil to photograph.  Because as you would expect,  while I am trying to get it to line up along my focal plan, it is busy trying to run away and hide.
