Invasion of the doodle bugs
Also known as maybugs or cockchafers.
I briefly went in the garden at dusk and the air was buzzing! They are very awkward fliers and bump into things all the time, including hair, which made me scream and run. But I persevered so you can all see what all the excitement was about.
Hundreds were at it in the bushes and there seemed to be a mass mating gathering. Sadly the males die when they have done their job. The females lay their eggs in the ground where they hatch after 2-3 weeks and live underground as grubs for three to five years. Then they hatch and used to be a serious pest when they were out in the thousands devouring crops in the old days.
Nearly eradicated with DDT in the nineteen fifties they are making a comeback. Hopefully not doing too much damage but providing food for the birds.
