Copper

Having completely missed the first generation in the spring, this, my first Small Copper butterfly of the year, will be at the start of second, mid-summer generation. As anticipated earlier in the week, I also saw my first Gatekeeper of the year. 

I’d wandered along the Bank to check my usual Purple Hairstreak spot, but my lunchtime walk coincided with it being quite overcast, and there was no sign of butterfly life high in the oak trees. 

The Green Woodpeckers were being noisy and I had a fleeting glimpse of one of them.
