Prunus insititia

I discovered this fine young fruit the other day, on one of the hedging shrubs we bought in several years ago as bare root plants. The plant was supposed at the time to be Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa).

Whilst the shrub certainly is spiny, this solitary fruit - the first it has yet produced - seems too small (and the wrong shape) be to be a Sloe. We reckon it must in fact be some kind of Damson or Bullace (Prunus insititia).

We shall see how it develops...
