#11 'A history of Chailey in 50 images'

The 11th image in the weekly series and we hurtle forward to the 16th century.

The Grade II listed Chailey Moat dates from at least 1540 although much of the original timber-framed medieval building is hidden by later alterations. This moated house is set in 45 acres of gardens, grounds and pasture and was formerly the Rectory. Tradition has it that the moat - which is enormous - was dug by the Rev Richard Porter, rector from 1713-53, but it probably dates from much earlier.
