We’re no strangers to love

When I left university in a year many years ago; himself had left for the Gulf on HMS Edinburgh… and I had moved back home having fallen out completely and utterly with my flat mate of three years.

I worked a series of temporary jobs; admin, market research and then I stumbled across a job for a bar / restaurant manager and the address was this blue building.

It’s now the harbour side hotel or something similar but at that time it was the offices of an organisation run by two brothers and one of the brother’s wife.

I was so very excited to get the job. We had individual interviews; group interviews and one on one. It was exhausting.

There were six managers to be hired - and on the first day we all turned up at the first premises; one of our number was fifteen minutes late and he was rather unceremoniously fired in front of us. No excuses; no second chances. Just gone.

I think it was a play to let us know who was in charge
