JUST KEEPING MY BEAK WARM

Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber); dunno why they bury their beaks when snoozing but they do. But even while sleeping those eyes open wide immediately when a sound is heard. Alligators like to eat these birds so it pays to be wary.

Y'all already know that they are filter feeders feeing mostly on small crustaceans and algae. The pinkish color is derived from carotene...an abundant substance in crustaceans. Without this substance the birds would likely be white.
