The White House

No, not that one.

This White House is a splendid pub, in an isolated position 380 metres above sea level. It is well known to walkers on the Pennine way, as that long distance footpath crosses the A 58 Rochdale - Halifax Road at this spot. Today, it was bitterly cold and windy but there were still numerous hardy walkers.

For me, the pub's most enjoyable offerings are the beer - preferably Timothy Taylor's "Landlord" - and the incomparable Barnsley Chops, with chips and mounds of other vegetables.

A Barnsley Chop is a lamb chop, taken from right across the loin which becomes a double sided chop. It is sometimes referred to as a saddle chop, as it is cut across the saddle producing a double loin chop, with a little under fillet all in one. The Barnsley Chop is believed to have originated at Brooklands Hotel, in Barnsley, where it is still served, though some claim it was the Kings Head pub in Barnsley.
