ASCLEPIAS tuberosa
In a gardening class I learned to call a plant by its Latin name, instead of its
common name; because, there can be many common names, which can be confusing.
This plant is a good example. Here are some of the common names:
-Indian Root
-Indian Posy
-Canada Root
-Pleurisy Root
-Chigger Flower
-Silky Swallow-wort (my favorite)
-Butterfly Milkweed: most common name
This is one of 200 species in this family of native American perennial herbs..They are best know for being a host plant for Monarch Butterflies; & are attractive to other pollinators. This is why I planted it in my little side
flower bed: I was hoping the color & abundant nectar would attract the Monarchs. They are also a food source for the Queen butterflies &
Emperor butterfly larvae.
That's the good news. The bad news is: it is invasive, has an extensive root system & produces lots of seeds. It is also highly toxic to dogs & horses. Mine are planted in a confined area, with a fence around the flower bed. The area is not of much interest to Angus, who is a strict Keto carnivore.
The flower's symbolism: Remembrance, Dignity & Freedom
"The gentian's bluest fringes
Are curling in the sun
In dusty pods the milkweed
Its hidden silk has spun."
-Helen Hunt Jackson
