In My Chair
Today has been mainly about chairs. In anticipation of a new suite - and to try and clear as much as possible before the decorators arrive - we have been selling off the random chairs we have acquired over the years. A large tub chair went several weeks back, and it’s smaller brother finally went today. I say “finally” because it’s been listed on Sell & Seek for a few weeks, and though a lady “claimed” it ten days ago, she couldn’t collect until today. Sensing that the chair had been bought for a rental/holiday property, I cheekily enquired if she wanted the matching high back chair which was the next to be listed. Amazingly, she said yes so that was two bits of furniture shifted for the price of one - so to speak. I let it go for all the cash she had left, which was £3 less than I wanted, but I decided that counted as a “bulk buy discount”.
The chair in the picture is one of many that my late uncle restored. We have a couple in our bedroom with cane seats - his speciality - but this one was a bit different. It sat in my parents’ hall for many years until the house was sold last year. Mum didn’t want it and was all for sending it to the sale room. I persuaded her to let me have it instead, because I’d always coveted it when I visited.
It’s obviously not a full size chair, but I’m undecided as to whether it’s a child’s chair (though it seems a bit too ornate for that) or a sample piece for a travelling furniture salesman. Could even be an apprentice piece, I suppose. Whatever, it’s very decorative and extremely well made/restored. It may not match the proposed new decor, but it will definitely find a home somewhere in the house!
