Gracie
I will stand guard
At the outpost of the stars,
In the darkness of deep midnights comet-scarred
Where the burning worlds are ending with their wars.
In the blackness of eternity, the cold
Of the sunless spaces standing, I will wait.
I will wrap my cloak about me, be consoled
With the thought of your appearance soon or late.
from I Will Stand Guard, by Edgar Lee Masters
I suppose Gracie is probably not so dramatic about her role as the poet here, though I'm sure she's very pleased when my wife stops by work over a three-day weekend to make sure her "other" cat is loved and well fed. Here Gracie is patrolling the warehouse, keeping all the mice honest.
