Over the Hills and Far Away
The last three miles were on a forest track - luckily we didn't meet a truck coming the other way. This was the view at the end of it - above the Kingston Crew's holiday house at Kidlandlee, way up on the Northumberland moors.
It's hard to believe that there was once a very large house here - built by a man called Leyland, who also introduced the plant which grows into those enormous hedges. The house was blown up in 1956, when the owners despaired of keeping it going.
The hedges are harder to eradicate.
We had a farewell supper at the pub in Alwinton, then they went off back up the track and we headed back over the Border.
