Footdee, Aberdeen
We started off our day with a walk out to the old fishing village of Footdee (Fittie). The village dates back to medieval times. The narrow cobbled streets are surrounded on every side by small houses with little gardens in squares, all with their backs to the sea to protect them from the coastal storms. The houses were built in 1809 to re-house the local fishing community who would be displaced by the harbour developments.
Initially the houses were identical but towards the end of the 19th century when the houses began to be sold some artistic 'touches' started to appear, especially to the sheds. Today, there are endless quirky touches to be found in amongst the 80 odd houses and their sheds!
As we started our walk back to the city centre the rain came down in torrents. We were quite a sight by the time we arrived at the Aberdeen Art Gallery! It reopened in 2020 after a four year closure for a landmark transformation. They have a very nice permanent collection and we were able to see the British Art Show which is touring in Aberdeen for the first time.
We met up with our niece and her partner in the evening and had a great evening of chat and catching up.
