Looking Over My Shoulder

The Barrier

I moved to Portsmouth about six years ago, from London and don't think I'll ever tire of living by the coast.

I'm not a history buff but as Portsmouth is full of naval history, sometimes it's quite fascinating to find out about your surroundings.

I decided to take the dog down the seafront today for a stroll. It was SO cold that we didn't stroll for long. The tide was beginning to go out and so I managed to grab some shots of the World War 2 submarine barrier. This barrier consists of a row of massive concrete blocks which lay about 6 foot below the water level. They are seriously huge and go out into the Solent as far as Horse Sand Fort...not sure how far out that is but it is a LONG way. My Blip shows the first block which is practically on the beach and you can just about make out the barrier fading into the distance. The dark blob on the horizon is the Fort. Obviously the idea was to stop enemy submarines from sneaking into the naval dockyard and it proved very successful!

Back home for a hot cuppa and to thaw out....
