Keeping Kineton Beautiful
Probably similar in many places, our local council just does not have the time/money/resources to do as much street cleaning as we might prefer. So a couple of the local councillors started the Keep Kineton Beautiful group where volunteers spend a morning once a month tidying up part of the village. Today we tidied the pavements/road verges/gutters in the square as the Farmer's Market will be there on Saturday. Our square has what was the fire appliance storage building and then a school in the middle so more of a square road now.
It is always quite a surprise what 6-10 people can achieve in a couple of hours. We started in the corners today and just kept going until we met each other in the middle of the sides.
In the main picture, I am cleaning out the last of a mixture of weeds and foxgloves/hollyhocks from a section of the pavement while David is deciding just how much of that pyracantha he can get into his car and on to the tip this afternoon. In the extra, four others put together to give an idea of where we ended up.
The volunteers are all what you might call active retired, if we were not doing this we would probably be moaning about the state of the village and become grumpy old farts - we prefer to apply our sense of JFDI :-)
Most of the young people who have livings to earn or children to care for usually stop by and say thank you. Gill and I were working outside the barbers, they offered us tea and coffee, the bakery on the other corner gave us a choice of pastries and more coffee.
Despite the absence of hi vis jackets ... no one was run over or otherwise injured.
