The Ancient Library in the Cathedral
This is the time of the annual Heritage Open Days (when places right across the country - which may not normally be open to the public - are open for free) and we booked to visit the Ancient Library in Bury St Edmunds cathedral The library was started in 1595 and is the oldest parish library in the country. This is because until 1914 the cathedral was simply the parish church of St James There are a little under 600 volumes here and the oldest dates from 1482
