If you can't beat them...

View from an aqueduct.

It isn't often you can look down from a height on to a lock but today I could.  As we had been unable to go on the River Weaver we decided to have a wander up the "Maccie" (Macclesfield Canal).  To get on to the "Maccie" is unusual, rather than a simple turn you go up this set of locks and another one, then turn.  This brings you back round over the canal by way of an aqueduct.

To get the shot I was standing on the roof of Solace.  This part of the Trent & Mersey canal is unusual in having double locks.  This speeds up movement and hopefully helps to save water.  There is a chance you will find a lock either full or empty meeting your requirements rather than  have to fill (if going down hill) or empty (if going up)  and so is faster and reduces water use.

Before we turned on to the "Maccie" we had come up 12 of the 31 locks of "heartbreak hill".   Having moored for the night we knew that the next day we faced all 12 of the Macclesfield locks.  They are all in under one mile so quite a challenge.

By the way the strange colour of the water is iron staining coming out of the Harecastle tunnel.
