Leeds

Today’s the day ............... for a city break

One of the great things about travelling on a canal is that it gives you a view of places not normally available to travellers on other forms of transport.  Canals, in particular, snake their way into cities, paying no heed to main streets and often revealing the rough underbelly and the origins of that city in the first place.

Leeds is a good example of that with its ‘Dark Arches’ – a network of unlined brick arches that carry the River Aire under its mainline station.  And it’s in the centre of the city that the Leeds – Liverpool Canal joins up with the River Aire via a lock – and enables onward navigation all the way to the Humber ports of East Yorkshire.

Another bonus is that it’s also possible to moor up your narrowboat, at no cost, right in the centre of Leeds at Granary Wharf – and use it as a base to explore the city ................
