The Ship of Life, Bangladesh
IMPACT's floating hospital, the Jibon Tari, pictured here at dusk.
The hospital boat provides a lifeline for underserved communities in Bangladesh; dispensing medical care, physiotherapy and surgery to reverse disabling conditions.
Last year almost 6,000 men, women and children had their sight, hearing or movement restored, or cleft lip repaired.
Local health workers are trained and health education delivered to remote communities, leaving behind skills and knowledge once the boat moves on.
Living conditions may be improving for some in Bangladesh but in poor areas, 'People live one step away from disaster. Illness, disability or natural disasters can throw them into destitution', describes one of our medical volunteers.
