Diary of an Edinburgher

Jersey Day One

Not much sleep, and an early start, for we had to take Archie to Derek for his holidays before we went to the airport. He was restless last night, and I could hear him licking, licking at his paw. In the morning, I could see that it was soaking. We had a look, and there was a big red throbbing lump in between his toes! Eeeek! Total panic stations! What to do? It couldn’t be left. He had to go to the (emergency) vet! But we couldn’t take him. And Derek couldn’t take him… Elizabeth!

I rang her at a fairly early hour and she came to the rescue, thankfully, and was happy to take him to the vet, and then deliver him to Derek. So we dropped him off at her place. He was overjoyed at this little surprise. And we could head on out to the airport.

We’ve had updates, of course. He’s on two types of pills and had a steroid injection. We’ve had four six videos from Derek, too. We’re so lucky that Derek and Archie have met before, and it wasn’t a new sitter.

The flight was only just over an hour. The queues for COVID testing weren’t too bad. We’d filled in an extensive questionaire beforehand, so that speeded things up. The testing wasn’t too bad - certainly not as bad as the awful nasal swab Nicky had in Switzerland.

We arrived on a sunny day, but I think the rest of the week isn’t too promising. We hopped on the bus to town (I love Jersey buses), as we are staying in our favourite hotel - Premier Inn (other hotels are available). We had an ice cream in Liberation Square, of course.

This holiday in Jersey was planned and booked for the beginning of the year, then lockdown happened. So it’s nice to have finally made it, three years exactly when we were last here, in glorious sunshine, when JR walked right round the island with Anne & Bob (over a few days).

I got my negative test results about half an hour ago, but JR had a nervous wait for hers, which has just come in. Amazing what a relief that is.

The face on the wall mural is made up of 6,000 photos of Jersey folk, past and present, to commemorate the five years Jersey had under German occupation during the Second World War.

The Ariadne is the largest steam clock in the world!

And that"s the ice cream shop in the background of the Liberation Square statue.
