York
We left Woodstock, Oxfordshire this morning and made our way up to York where we were breaking the journey with an overnight stop at the University of York.
The University campus in Heslington is about 30 - 40 minutes walk from the city centre.
York is a medieval city enclosed within miles of impressive defensive walls with four fortified gateways built mainly in the 13th century.
The majestic York Cathedral (known as York Minster) was completed in 1472 after several centuries of building!
Visiting York late afternoon, early evening on a Saturday possibly wasn’t the best idea. It was the busiest place we’ve been on our trip, swarming with hen nights and groups of people out for a good time! It was as busy as Edinburgh in August.
Although the Covid restrictions in England have been completely relaxed we’ve found up till now that museums, galleries, cafes etc. have still asked people to wear masks and generally follow the guidance as it was. But York seems to have had a bonfire of the Covid rules – we scurried back to our digs at the University before it got too mad!
