Missing water

It wasn't too bad today, so we took the dog to the river bank and let him run in the mud. The River Rance pictured here is behind a hydroelectric barrage, so the tide is partially controlled by the barrage, and doesn't move up and down as fast as it would otherwise.

There are only a handful of large hydroelectric schemes like this that use salt water and the sea to function, and for most of the last 50 years the one here between Saint-Malo and Dinard was the largest in the world. The Severn Estuary has long been touted as a good place, but nothing has ever come of it. The problem with salt water is that it's not so nice on your steel or concrete, so people try to avoid this kind of engineering in the sea if they can avoid it.
