Malhamdale and Walter Morrison
This morning we set out from HF Holidays' Newfield Hall, Airton, our home for the week, on our first guided walk. We walked in Malhamdale to the famous cove (and as it was a fine Saturday we were not alone, as my photo shows!). Having marvelled at the fine limestone cliff and the rock climbers scaling it, we returned via the village of Kirkby Malham, where we visited the delightful parish church of St Michael the Archangel. It was founded in the 8th- 9th century, rebuilt in the 15th century, and restored in 1879. My extra shows the 11th century tub font, with harvest festival gifts and a display about the Walter Morrison Festival . Walter was known as the grand old man of Craven, and was a tremendous benefactor to the area, funding half the church's restoration, the local schools, and the construction of the chapel at Giggleswick school. The Walter Morrison festival is commemorating him in 2021 because it is the centenary of his death. He lived at Malham Tarn House, now a field studies centre.
