Victoriana and more nostalgia
This morning we had a very pleasant stroll around Matlock. We quickly found the Hall Leys Park which is bounded on one side by the River Derwent. It is a wonderfully conserved Victorian public park (reminding me of the 1960s children's BBC TV programme "Trumpton") with a bandstand, boating pond , playground, paddling pool, miniature railway, formal gardens, and this preserved Tram Shelter. We then followed signs to the top of Pic Tor and found a war memorial and the medieval St Giles church and cemetery (see extra), all with commanding views across the valley and towards Riber Castle.
Sadly, we couldn't linger longer as we had arranged to meet some family in Lichfield at 12.30pm, and had to be on our way. We met up with my husband's brother in law, two nephews, one with his partner and their one year old son (our great nephew). We had never met the baby before and it had been some years since we had seen the adults so it was really good to catch up.
Then it was the final leg back home in Winchester.
