French Chef, confectioner, and distiller who invented the method of preserving food by enclosing it in hermetically sealed containers. 1795.

1955 a French postal stamp commemorated him.
1991 a statue of Appert was erected in Châlons - en - Champagne. The town where he was born.

Mr C’s father was an engineer specialising in machinery which made cans for the food industry.
His job took him all over the world from Brazil to China, and many countries in between.
The machines were all made in Drighlington, Yorkshire.
As with many of our industries the factory is no longer there.
However the business is still going, but on a smaller scale, in Leeds.
